Pre-Workout Draft Board

By Siz

Before the draft workouts start, before the final date to withdraw their names from the draft, I've put together my preliminary draft board.

Let me explain how I set up my board. Instead of ranking players 1-50, I broke them out into 5 groups (Franchise Players, All-Stars, Solid Starters, Bench Contributors, and 10th-12th men). The way you would use the board is a combination of drafting upon need and best player available. Before you move on to the "All-Star" category, you make sure that all "Franchise Players" are gone. Then, you would need to evaluate the players in the "AS" category, and pick based on both need and best player available. Hopefully that makes sense.

A few other notes. Position is placed in parenthesis as a number following their name. Players with an "I" next to their name means they have some injury concerns, and might be holding back their stock. Players with a "U" have a fair amount of upside that means they could easily move up into a higher category (however, I feel that it is unlikely).

I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of these guys as much as I would have liked, but based on what I've seen and read, here is how I would rank them:

So, what does it all mean for the Jazz? Based on my list, the Jazz are picking 23rd, and there are 21 "starter" quality players in the draft. I think that a few of the next group of players could slide up based on potential, so there is a good chance the Jazz could end up with a guy like a Chris Douglas-Roberts or Nicolas Batum type player. I don't think any of the bigs I like in that range will be available, so the Jazz could draft for need instead of taking the best player available at that point, and could end up with Robin Lopez, DeVon Hardin or Roy Hibbert. Of the three bigs, Robin Lopez is most likely to be gone by the time the Jazz pick, and Hardin most likely to be available in the 2nd round.

As far as guys in the 2nd round that I think we could target would include Hardin if he is available (although we'd likely have to move up to get him), Joey Dorsey (a Millsap like player) or Jason Thompson. Rudy Mbemba as a 3rd point, energy type guy might be interesting, especially if we can leave him overseas and retain his rights for a while.

All in all this seems to be a 2-man draft at the top, with a fairly deep first round. I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a bit of movement as there are a lot of kids with potential in the draft. Should be a fun and interesting draft night.
