  Jazz Statistic's quiz
by Peter Glans

After the Lakers game AK was 30/76 from the outside for 39.5%, which he raised to 40.5% after the next game against the Hornets. That percentage is very good! However, since then he has been in a shooting slump from
the outside hitting only 8 of 40 outside shots for a total of 40/119, that is 33.6%. AK has shot in total 222 shots, thus he has shot 119/222= 53.6% of his shot from the outside so far.

As a team Jazz shot 37.1% from the outside and 64.2% inside. 64.6% of their shots are outside shots. The numbers for Jazz opponents are: outside 35.7%; inside 59.4%; and 72.3% of their shots are outside shots.

These numbers show that Jazz not only shoot better than the opponents but also that they shoot a higher percentage of high-percentage shots (read: inside shots), which probably is not a big surprise for most of you. The numbers also tell you that AK still needs to work a lot on his outside shot.

And here's the quiz...
Name the player who

(only consider the 9 players that have played at least 400 min., i.e. exclude Stevenson, Amaechi, Arroyo, and Massenburg):

1. Has the highest outside shooting percentage ?
2. Has the highest shooting percentage on lay-ups ?
3. Has most inside shots per 48 min.?
4. Has most dunk attempts per 48 min.?
5. Has the best point differential (+/-) statistic ?
6. Has the worst point differential (+/-) statistic ?
7. Is on the floor for most Jazz turnovers per 48 min.?
8. The opponent team score most points per 48 min. "against"?

The full stat lists with comments are given below for those interested...

1. Who has the highest outside shooting percentage ?
Correct answer: Stockton
Harpring or Cheaney sounds like logical choices. However, despite shooting a blistering 46.2% on 3's Harprings outside shooting is fairly mediocre since he only shoots 33.5% from midrange. Cheaney has a nice midrange game and shots 49.2% overall, however, his outside shooting is not as good as Stockton's. In fact, Stockton at 43.3% is the only one of the "regulars" that shoots over 40% from the outside. The full list (incl. # attempts) is given below
Massenburg 70.0 10
Stockton 43.3 157
Arroyo 41.2 34
Cheaney 39.5 167
Stevenson 39.2 74
Malone 36.7 327
Harpring 36.4 239
Padgett 36.3 113
Kirilenko 33.6 119
Jackson 33.3 105
Ostertag 33.3 36
Collins 27.9 43
Amaechi 25.0 20

2. Who has the highest shooting percentage on lay-ups ?
Correct answer: Cheaney This is a difficult one and the margin is rather small. In fact, if one count all inside shots (i.e. also dunks and tip-ins) Kirilenko and Harpring are slightly ahead of Cheaney. On lay-ups alone Cheaney is slightly ahead though. Cheaney has shown a good inside game and a knack for finishing in traffic. Stevenson should look at how Cheaney plays defense but also at how he's finishing in the lane. Note that Stevenson shoots nearly as well from the outside as Cheaney (question 1) but only 8/26 for 30.8% on lay-ups - Ouchhh...
The full list (incl. # attempts) is given below
Cheaney 74.2 62
Harpring 72.1 147
Jackson 66.7 30
Kirilenko 64.3 56
Collins 61.0 41
Padgett 59.5 37
Ostertag 58.8 51
Malone 57.4 101
Arroyo 54.5 11
Stockton 53.2 79
Amaechi 52.4 21
Massenburg 33.3 9
Stevenson 30.8 26

3. Who has most inside shots per 48 min.?
Correct answer: Harpring
Harpring has really played well within the Jazz system. He's constantly moving and cutting, and since he plays with great passers that results in a lot of lay-ups.
Harpring 7.7
Kirilenko 6.6
Massenburg 5.4
Ostertag 5.4
Amaechi 5.3
Malone 5.2
Stevenson 5.1
Collins 4.9
Arroyo 4.9
Stockton 4.7
Padgett 4.5
Cheaney 4.3
Jackson 2.6

4. Who has most dunk attempts per 48 min.?
Correct answer: Kirilenko. This one is not even close. Now that Marshall is gone Kiri is the only Jazz player that dunks with any regularity. As a team Jazz is 64/68 on dunks (Kiri is 35/37) while
the opponents are 116/120...
Kirilenko 2.4
Stevenson 0.8
Padgett 0.6
Massenburg 0.5
Ostertag 0.4
Cheaney 0.3
Amaechi 0.2
Collins 0.2
Harpring 0.1
Malone 0.1
Jackson 0.0
Stockton 0.0
Arroyo 0.0

5. Who has the best point differential (+/-) statistic ?
Correct answer: Ostertag! Stockton had the best point differential (PD) two seasons ago, but this season there's  not a big drop-off when he goes to the bench. Kirilenko had the best PD last season  and his numbers are good this year too. However, this season he plays alongside
Harpring who has been very good and have the 2nd best PD at the moment, behind Tag!!! Most observers agree on that Tag have had his best year since he signed that big contract, but still I think few people realize how important he really is. With Borchardt out he is the team's only intimidator at the center spot. When he (and his head) is in the game the team defense becomes so much better - the opponents shooting percentage with Tag in the game is 39.0%! with Massenburg it is 43.4%, with Collins 44.7% and with Amaechi an awful 48.9%. Even more surprising than the defensive numbers is the fact that the Jazz shot 49.4% with him in the game, which is better than for any other player (except for seldom used Arroyo).

6. Who has the worst point differential (+/-) statistic ?
Correct answer: Collins
Collins started the preseason with a couple of very good games, but he couldn't  duplicate that in any of the regular season game before his injury. His 2nd season  was a disappointment - for instance did he average only 3.2 defensive rebounds per 48 min., which is fewer than Stockton (3.3). Hopefully he can fully recover from his knee injury and play a lot better in his 3rd season, if not he might have a hard time to find a new job in the NBA.

The PD are given below (left number), as well as the player values (to the right) that account for playing time and how the team does when the player is on the bench. Note! players like Arroyo and Massenburg have still played too few minutes for their player values to be meaningful.
Ostertag 146 10.6
Harpring 136 5.3
Kirilenko 116 5.0
Padgett 83 4.3
Stockton 74 -1.3
Cheaney 65 -2.7
Malone 59 -7.5
Jackson 54 -0.5
Arroyo 41 12.7
Massenburg 23 6.7
Stevenson 1 -6.1
Amaechi -12 -9.1
Collins -36 -12.9

7. Who is on the floor for most Jazz turnovers per 48 min.?
Correct answer: Jackson

Jackson helps the Jazz a lot - the team is, for instance, a better rebounding team when he is on the floor. However, it would be nice if he could cut down on the turnovers. Below the number of Jazz turnovers per 48 min. for each player is given.
Arroyo 17.1
Stevenson 17.3
Stockton 17.5
Cheaney 17.7
Harpring 18.1
Ostertag 18.4
Malone 18.5
Collins 18.7
Padgett 18.8
Amaechi 18.8
Kirilenko 19.0
Massenburg 19.1
Jackson 19.9

8. Who the opponents score most points per 48 min. "against"?
Correct answer: Malone
Last season I noticed that the Jazz averaged about 6 more points per 48 min. with Malone in the game than without him, but also that the opponents averaged about 6 more points! So far this season the difference is even bigger, the averages so far are:
Jazz 95.1 - Opp. 90.1; with Malone 97.1 - 94.3; without Malone 90.5 - 80.2!!!
Higher tempo with Malone, opponents best players on the bench when Malone is resting are two reasons that probably play a role. But that cannot explain it all, the fact remains that the Jazz seem to play better team defense without Malone.
Arroyo 79.4
Massenburg 84.2
Ostertag 84.8
Jackson 86.3
Padgett 86.9
Cheaney 88.5
Harpring 90.9
Kirilenko 90.9
Stevenson 91.1
Collins 93.2
Stockton 93.3
Amaechi 94.0
Malone 94.3

So, the The correct answers are:

1. Stockton
2. Cheaney
3. Harpring
4. Kirilenko
5. Ostertag
6. Collins
7. Jackson
8. Malone
