A look at the enemy.
by Ron Richards
Thought I’d talk a little about the players not on the Jazz, that TV
doesn’t show unless you watch all the games.
First.....Sene, of course. Did you expect me not to start with him? The
first few minutes of the Sonic’s game looked like a highlight film for
Sene. Seven points, 3 blocks, (one that was simply spectacular on
Shavilk Randolph going up for a dunk.), 3 rebounds and complete
domination of the paint. Then, whether it was the Sixers catching up to
him or conditioning, the game slipped away from him, and finally the
Sonic’s coaches pulled him so as to not destroy what confidence he had
built that first few minutes. Still, an impressive debut at this level.
Ian Mahinmi, San Antonio. Ian is a 6'10 post man with great athleticism
and length who is growing into a body that will eventually handle the
NBA game with ease. He reminds me of a cross between David Robinson and
Sene..... Once again San Antonio hits the jackpot with a Euro stashed
overseas.
Rodney Carney. Familiar name, and a game that grows on you. First half
of the game against the Sonics, the Sixers slowed the ball down and
suffered for it. As the tempo increased in the second half, Rodney’s
game grew as well. He gets great elevation on his shot, and has
tremendous hops and speed in the full court game. I was initially not
impressed, but as the game went on it was hard to ignore him. Tremendous
athlete.
Shelden Williams. Hawks Looked a little lost and not used to the speed
and physicality of the NBA game. He’s a tough customer and will likely
bounce back in his next game.
Marvin Williams. Hawks. Last year’s 2nd pick isn’t lost any more. He’s
using he athleticism going to the hoop and drawing fouls. Expect him to
score in the twenties the rest of the revue, despite the boos of the
pro-Jazz crowd.
Noel Felix. Sonics...Perennial RMR participant, solid forward with a
nice shot, strong rebounder, never seems to make it in the bigs.
Sometimes you wonder what fine line separates the have's from the have
not's. Scores well and comes up big in the summer leagues, but can’t
seem to translate that into an NBA career.
Yotam Halperin. Sonics. Israeli PG selected in 2nd round, board
favorite. Seemed slow and confused the first game, but has picked it up
in the second and made some nice shots from deep and two great passes.
Smart heady player who needs to adapt to the NBA speed.
These are just a few of the players that have grabbed my attention so
far in the revue.
