Top-5 Jazz moments of 2003

by Carlos Cardoso

I would love to point out only happy moments here (as I did last year), but two of the most important moments of the Utah Jazz in 2003 were not very happy. As we have been discovering during this season, though, they were not the end of the world. Actually, In some sense, they were more like a start…

#5- Inspired Jazz edge Kings in game 3

We lost the other 4 games of this series. So what? That was a huge win, the biggest win of the season…it gave us a feeling that the Jazz could compete with the Kings, and maybe even upset the favorites. It didn't happen, but I still remember the feeling, and it was really great.

Weather cancels Grizz trip to Utah
1/8
Remember snow days in grade school, those glorious, unexpected vacations from the day-to-day grind? This isn't like that.
For the Jazz, Wednesday's postponement of their game with the Memphis Grizzlies, stranded by a snowstorm in Portland, is more like a baseball rainout: A hassle they could do without.
"It's awful," said Jazz vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor after it became clear Wednesday afternoon that the Grizzlies' charter flight would be unable to take off for Utah.
Storm cancels Jazz game
1/8
Through rain and sleet and snow . . .
      Aw, forget it.
The NBA could not deliver on Wednesday night, postponing the Jazz's Delta Center game against Memphis because the Grizzlies were weather-locked in Portland.
A freak storm has pounded Portland and the Pacific Northwest with snow, ice, strong winds and generally atypical winter weather over the past couple days, initially prompting postponement of the Grizzlies' Tuesday-night visit with the Trail Blazers.

Center, Jazz part — for now
1/7
The Jazz on Tuesday waived Paul Grant, the 7-foot center working in real-estate redevelopment with his brother in Boston before being signed New Year's Day and one night later playing in his first NBA game since 1999.
The move — coincidentally coming on Grant's 30th birthday — means Utah will again be shorthanded when facing Memphis tonight at the Delta Center.

Bobbye Sloan beat breast cancer more than six years ago, but Jazz coach Jerry Sloan hinted on Tuesday that his wife might be sick again.
"She has to have a biopsy done to be more definitive with what is going on with her," a tight-lipped Sloan said one day after missing the Jazz's 108-94 victory over Dallas to be with his wife. "And that's all I want to say about it."
Sloan gets praise from peers
1/7
A pair of Hall of Famers, that's what the Jazz once had. Everybody said so: Two sure-fire, first-ballot, cast-the-plaques-now immortals.
But maybe there were three, all along -- and maybe one still toils for the Jazz.
Sloan's focus on family
1/7
Assuming he coaches against Memphis tonight, it may not be seeking win No. 800 with the Jazz that is foremost on Jerry Sloan's mind.
Rather, the health of wife, Bobbye, will take precedence.

A Jazzhoops exclusive interview with Jazz captain Matt Harpring
It Starts at The Top

By Johnathan Kendrick

Three weeks ago, the day the Jazz played their first game, Matt Harpring, was named captain of this season's Utah Jazz. A modest step for the player who takes an even more modest approach to being team captain. "Self proclaimed leaders are not the ones that you follow," Matt Harpring told me during this interview.
"It's the ones that go out there and do all the dirty work and work every night."
