Utah Jazz outlast Hawks 87-81, tie Denver
|
|
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than pretty.
In a contest to see who could play the ugliest game, the Jazz came in
second and won against a struggling Atlanta Hawks team 87-81. This one
should of had a parental advisory on it. With the win and the loss of Denver
Sunday to
Minnesota the Jazz move into the 8th
playoff spot in the west. Next game is Tuesday at the Delta center versus
the Washington Wizards at 7:00pm (MT)

Hindsight is 20/20
|
|
by Stef Siepel
Have you ever found yourself on the verge of leaving your house for an
appointment, and then you doubted which route you would take? Suddenly you
are questioning yourself whether it would be smarter to take the tunnel or
the bridge. When you’ve finally made a decision you drive off to get to your
14:30 appointment.
So,
when you finally enter the room at 15:00, just after all the decisions have
been finalized, you are bound to be asked the question why you were this
late. “There
was an accident in the tunnel,” you reply. “Oh,” says someone, “but why
didn’t you take the bridge then?” You are irritated because you don’t need
him to tell you that you took the wrong road because you have already come
to that conclusion. You know you’ve made the wrong decision, but hindsight
always has been 20/20.

Jazz hold
the line on ticket prices next season
3/23
With 12 games left in the regular season, the Utah Jazz are
most definitely in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Their fans, in surveys, have deemed them "more exciting" to watch this season
compared with recent Jazz teams with the aging dynamic duo that's no longer in
Utah.
Attendance is very close to what it was last year, off just 80 people per game
from what Karl Malone's and John Stockton's last team drew. |
Attendence at three-year high
3/23
By the Jazz's math, a minus-two on the Delta Center court
this season figured to equal a minus-100,000 or so in the arena's stands.
But the equation hasn't added up.
"The post-Karl [Malone] and John [Stockton] years, we expected attendance would
be a little less," said Jay Francis, the team's chief marketing officer.
Instead, after a slow start at the box office in November, the new-look Jazz are
beginning to regain their tough-ticket reputation. |
Jazz
recognize added urgency of late season
3/23
He's never been in the NCAA Tournament, but Andrei
Kirilenko figures the Jazz's playoff pursuit is pretty similar.
"Every game is golden game," Kirilenko said. "If we lose, that's it. We are
done."
It's not quite that unforgiving, but he has a point about the playoff chase in
general. In years past, the Jazz spent late March maneuvering for postseason
position, secure in knowing they were in the tournament no matter how they
played down the stretch. |
Jazz
regress, but Hawks prove worse
3/21
A strong start to build a lead, an ugly muddle in the
middle to fall distressingly far behind, and, when the opposition predictably
wilts, a surge at the end to overcome their own mistakes.
Shaky form, solid results -- the Jazz's tortuous pursuit of a playoff berth in
many ways resembles their 87-81 victory over the Hawks on Saturday. Well, except
nobody knows yet whether the Jazz can pull off the happy ending.

Jazz drop
Hawks
3/21
Point guards bailing out early on the offense. A loose
ball on the floor, and no one in a hurry to go after it. No energy, no focus,
little will to win.
Jerry Sloan saw a lot he did not like Saturday night.
He also saw the Jazz beat Atlanta 87-81 for their second straight victory and
their third in a now-concluded stretch of five in a row on the road. |
Alabama
alumnus Williams rooting for ex-teammates
3/21
Outside the locker room, injured Jazz big man Curtis
Borchardt shuffled like he had just lost his best friend. Inside, Mo Williams
grinned because of what some of his best friends had just found: a way into the
NCAA's Sweet 16.
While the Jazz were busy beating Atlanta on Saturday night, Williams' old
school, Alabama, was upsetting No. 1 seed Stanford. |
