takes over Mailman's route in Detroit
Kirilenko scores career-high 27 points to help
Jazz overcome Malone's illnessAndrei
Kirilenko knew he was getting a chance because of some rare
circumstances Friday night, and he made the most of it.
Kirilenko started in place of the ill Karl
Malone and scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Utah
Jazz to a 100-97 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Recover Rapidly Without ill Malone
Flu-stricken Karl Malone spent Friday night at the Jazz's
hotel, trying to get better.
His teammates spent the evening at the Palace of Auburn Hills,
doing the same thing.
The Jazz had lost four straight and fallen to eighth place in
the Western Conference. They were in danger of getting whiplash
from looking over their shoulders at the Los Angeles Clippers,
who are chasing them for the final playoff spot.

•What!?
No Mail!
Karl Malone has missed eight games in his career -- four
because of injury or illness and four because of NBA-imposed
suspensions for incidents in the previous game involving Isiah
Thomas, David Robinson, Othella Harrington and Christian
Laettner (Malone has played in 1,337 of a possible 1,345
regular-season games in his 17-year career): [3/16]

•No
Malone, no problem
Following a loss one night earlier in Charlotte, Jazz star Karl
Malone said he probably shouldn't have played.
Friday night against Detroit, the Mailman did not.
As it turned out, that was a good thing for Utah.

Salt Lake Tribune -- Inexcusable Jazz Saunter Through Defeat
The Jazz have run out of excuses.
They could not have been tired Thursday night, not after having
two full days off before a 100-82 loss at Charlotte. [3/15]

•Sloan Hints at Shuffling Jazz's Starting Lineup
In search of an elusive fast start, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan
hinted he would change his starting lineup -- again -- for
tonight's game against the Charlotte Hornets.
Utah is seeking to snap a three-game losing streak, having
fallen to New York, Houston and Memphis in games that went
down to the final seconds after beginning with shoddy Jazz
play in the first quarter. [3/14] |

The accusation is not exactly novel. [3/13]
•Ejected, dejected Sloan says Jazz are not tough
After another rough night with the refs, not to
mention the opponent, the Jazz suddenly look like a team that
can't win respect, let alone games.
