Letters to John
by Stef Siepel
Disclaimer: This article isn’t based on actual events.
There has never been an exchange of letters between me and
John Stockton. I used the format of a letter solely as a
literary device, and everything in this article is totally
fictitious. It is my own opinion about the matter, and
solely my opinion, and not Stockton’s, or anybody else’s
for that matter.
Dear John,
First of all, let me start by congratulating you on your
41st birthday. Have you ordered your cane yet? Just
kidding, old man. How is the family? I expect Nada and the
kids are doing all right without you, like they have done
for 18 years now. Or is it 19? I’m afraid I stopped
counting after ten. You have been playing for so many
years now, that I just lost track.

All is well in Jazzland
4/15
All is well in Jazzland again — Karl Malone and team owner Larry
H. Miller have patched up their differences.
According to Miller, Malone called him Sunday and they had a
20-minute conversation during which they essentially agreed to
shelve their most recent dispute.
"It's fair to say we apologized to each other and put it behind
us," Miller said. "I think it's a good move for both of us to
give each other the benefit of the doubt." |
Unlucky 13th: Jazz assured a playoff foe
4/15
In one fell swoop Monday night, the Jazz learned the identity of
their first-round playoff opponent, were reminded why they
cannot beat the San Antonio Spurs and ridded themselves of a
longtime thorn in their collective behind.
San Antonio beat Utah 91-83 in front of 19,821 at the Delta
Center, extending the Spurs dominance over the Jazz to 13
victories in a row. |
Malone's Olympic invitation is now official
4/15
One day after he made amends with Jazz owner Larry H. Miller,
Karl Malone was officially named to the 2003 USA Basketball's
Senior National team that will try to qualify for the 2004
Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
If the Americans finish in the top three of a late-August FIBA
Americas Zone qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico, Malone will
be in line to play in his third Olympics.
The Jazz power forward won gold with the first United States
Dream Team at Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, and again at Atlanta in
1996. |
Robinson bids Utah farewell
4/15
David Robinson may have played his final game against Karl
Malone on Monday night.
The two will only meet again if both the Spurs and Utah advance
to the Western Conference finals.
Robinson was given a standing ovation by the Delta Center fans
prior to the game.
"We've had a lot of good battles here," Robinson said. "This
will be one of the places I'll remember."
Malone also tried to defuse the speculation when he called
Jazz owner Larry Miller and told him his wife was merely seeking
a second home in San Antonio. |
Jazz: Unlucky 13
4/15
The Jazz finally controlled Tim Duncan on Monday, preventing the
once-and-future MVP from having much effect in the fourth
quarter.
Not that it makes any difference, of course. These are the
Spurs. These are the Jazz. These are unwinnable games,
apparently.
Duncan nearly piled up a triple-double in the first three
quarters, then went scoreless in the fourth. |
Utah focus is on nemesis San Antonio
4/14
If ever there were a time when the
Utah Jazz didn't need additional distractions, it's now.
Their arch-nemeses, the San Antonio Spurs, are in town for
a Monday night game at the Delta Center. The same Spurs who have
beaten the Jazz in all three meetings this season and in 12
straight meetings dating back to Feb. 6, 2000. |
Malone says Mavs on list
4/14
Karl Malone got in the last shot in
last Friday's war of words with team owner Larry H. Miller,
though he fired it only in the presence of a writer from the
Dallas Morning News.
After the Utah media had departed, Malone told writer
Eddie Sefko he'd be interested in playing for the Mavericks. |
Jazz: Admiral Sails Into Utah for Final Visit
4/14
Jazz fans can say farewell to a future Hall of Famer tonight.
Or two. Or three.
John Stockton hasn't decided whether he will retire this summer.
Karl Malone is contemplating switching teams. |
