Keep Karl for 1 year, then get a free agent
5/17
Before discussing whether the Jazz should put Karl Malone in
the want ads, let's be clear about one thing: it's his
decision. The contract stipulates no trade can occur without
his permission.
Even so, talk of trading Malone arrived earlier than usual
this year. That's because summer vacation arrived early, too.
The Jazz were out of the playoffs in April for the first time
since 1986. That, in turn, pushed up discussions about Malone's future.

Cuban nixes Malone-to-Mavs talk
5/17
Should Karl Malone decide to seek an offseason trade away from
Utah, the Mailman might want to scratch Dallas from his list
of potential new addresses.
Two days after his club was bounced from the NBA playoffs,
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban squashed the popular notion that a
Malone-to-Dallas swap could soon be in the works.
"It's pretty much impossible for us to do it,"

Lopez willing to pay price
5/17
Raul Lopez is so anxious to get to Utah and play for the Jazz,
he might pay millions of dollars to get here. |

Malone Now Is Only Impeding Jazz Progress
Karl for Andre Miller? Get real. It's already too late to trade
him for that level of quality and youth.
This is just craziness. Yes, he hurts us for next year. But
that's the end of his contract. So he delays our "rebuilding" by
one year. It's worth tearing apart Stockton and Malone, forcing
Stock into retirement, and writing a nasty end to the story of
their legend, and thereby alienating a LOT of Jazz fans ... all to
advance the rebuilding process ONE YEAR? Moron.
2003-04 is another matter. If at that point, Stock retires, and
Malone wants too much money and/or wants to go to a contender,
then we can do a sign and trade--at market value. THAT would be
far easier than trying to trade him now, at his highly inflated
price tag.
Extending Karl's contract now isn't a feasible option. Under CBA
rules, his extension can only increase or decrease in salary by
12.5% of his salary in 2002-03. That's $16.85M--still too high,
I think. Let him become a free agent, and let the market set his
price--whether we pay it, or someone else does. |
Lopez Ready To Pay for Spot on Jazz
5/14
Raul Lopez is apparently willing to make a major financial
sacrifice in the interest of starting his Jazz career next
season.
The point guard, drafted by the Jazz in the first round
last June, is offering to pay $3 million to free himself from
his contract with Real Madrid in Spain, the magazine Gigantes
del Basket reported. |
Malone Now Is Only Impeding Jazz Progress

Jazz Must Move Ahead,
Trade Malone Now that the Jazz have blown engine parts and
spewed oil all over the pavement, it's time to make the tough
decision. You know the one. It mists up your windshield just
thinking about it, doesn't it?
Same here.
But it must be done.

Around Utah: Jazz Want Lopez Before NBA Draft
5/9
The Jazz are involved in negotiations to have point guard Raul
Lopez, their first-round draft choice in 2001, released from his
contract with Real Madrid.
"We want Raul Lopez now," Jazz vice president Kevin O'Connor
told the sports daily Marca. |
Jazz still waiting on Lopez
5/11
Jazz basketball operations vice president Kevin O'Connor has
returned from Spain, where he met recently with 2001
first-round draft choice Raul Lopez.
The Jazz, however, are no closer to knowing if Lopez will play
for Utah in the 2002-03 NBA season than they were before
O'Connor met with the Real Madrid point guard.
