| July 1st marked the first day of free agency
for players no longer under contract. The Jazz
can talk to free agents, but cannot sign them
until July 14th. On the 14th the Jazz will be
able to sign free agents including their own
restricted free agents. Restricted free agents
from other teams will be able to sign an offer
sheet, but must wait 15 days to see if their
former team matches it |

Siepel
A power forward that wore number 32
during his college career joins a team with Jerry
Sloan in the coaching staff and that has a quick,
white point guard that sat on the bench in his
rookie year, which was last year. Sounds eerily
familiar? And what if I say that the power forward
has been compared to some former Louisiana Tech
player because of the way he plays and competes?
No? And if I said that the quick point guard is a
pass first point guard just like the old school
batch used to be? Still not convinced? Then I only
have four words to offer:

Boozer
agrees to Jazz offer 7/9 Kenyon Martin
wanted to come to Utah but never arrived. Not even for a
short visit. Carlos Boozer never visited but wants to
stay in Utah. For a long time. Hours after it became
apparent the New Jersey Nets restricted free agent
Martin and the Jazz had canceled their scheduled
get-together Wednesday, the Jazz acknowledged an
agreement with Cleveland Cavaliers restricted free agent
Boozer on a deal that could bring Utah the power forward
it has so desperately sought ever since Karl Malone left
for the Los Angeles Lakers. |

RMR team includes Lopez 7/9 Newly hired
Jazz assistant coach Tyrone Corbin is jumping into his
new job without wasting much time. Corbin, who just
last month left his post as player development manager
with the New York Knicks to replace Kenny Natt as the
Jazz's No. 3 assistant coach, will serve as a co-coach
with Gordie Chiesa for Utah's entry in next week's
11-team Rocky Mountain Revue. |

Nash
considered Jazz before signing with
Suns 7/9 Point guard Steve Nash
seriously considered joining the Jazz before agreeing to
accept an offer from the Phoenix Suns, the Dallas
Morning News reported Thursday. The newspaper quoted
Nash as saying Utah "was second on his list and that he
would have visited the Jazz had a deal with Phoenix not
worked out." |

Arroyo agrees to stay in
Utah 7/8 One more
piece of Kevin O'Connor's puzzle is in place. The
Jazz on Wednesday agreed to terms on a multiyear
contract with restricted free agent Carlos Arroyo, their
starting point guard last season and the starting point
for Puerto Rico in the men's basketball tournament at
next month's Summer Olympics at Athens,
Greece. |

Arroyo
accepts offer to remain Jazz point
guard 7/8 Carlos Arroyo listened to
other teams, almost a dozen in all, but it probably
never mattered. Before the phone ever started ringing,
the Jazz's starting point guard told his agent to
concentrate on only one team: Utah. He got his wish.
Arroyo agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract
with the Jazz on Wednesday, taking himself off the
free-agent market before most other suitors could even
propose terms. |

Jazz
shopping for K-Mart 7/8 The Jazz join
America's poker craze today, though the stakes in this
three-way game of New Jersey Bluff are far higher than
any hand of Texas Hold 'em. Kenyon Martin, one of
the most coveted free agents on this summer's cash-rich
market, visits Salt Lake City this afternoon, giving the
Jazz a chance to look the Nets' All-Star in the eye and
guess whether he is bluffing. And vice versa. |
